Operating Systems

There are many operating systems supported by Sparcstation IPX all of that I know are UNIX based. It more joy to put a free operating system on the IPX because you will make the maximum use of your money that you spent on the IPX. I myself have used a wide variety of operating systems with my bunch of IPXs. Here is a list os some OS that can ve used with the IPX boxes.

OpenBSD OpenBSD - A very secure and robust operating system. It lives with least resources on your box. Boots very fast. Lots of (> 500MB) packages available.

NetBSD NetBSD - Although I haven't played a lot on NetBSD, I found it to be a good operating system for a machine with low resources.

Linux RedHat Linux - If you need to use your IPX as a workstation then you should use this linux OS. You will like Redhat linux if you are a newbie because there are many scripts that assist you in configuring and controlling your system. Redhat is bundled with Linuxconf utility by which you can configure your system daemons, different servers (mail, web, DNS, Samba, etc). Redhat linux seems to take a lot of resources on this pice of hardware but it runs.

Solaris Solaris - People say that solaris is *the* operating system for sun boxes. I tried Solaris 2.5.1 on one of my IPX machine and was stuck for applications. I tried to run the GNU stuff but it required GUNZIP, GCC, etc. Although the stuff is available at www.sunfreeware.com but it takes a lot of time to load it.
